The Oxygen Myth in Yoga: How Breath Science Changes Teaching

We’ve all been there, cueing students to “take a deep breath,” thinking more oxygen is the answer to stress, overwhelm, or tiredness.

But what if that’s not the full story?

The oxygen myth in yoga is the belief that more oxygen automatically means more calm, more energy, and more clarity. But when we dig into breath science, we learn that carbon dioxide (CO₂) plays an equally important, and often overlooked, role.

Understanding this shifts how we teach breath, support the nervous system, and guide our students with greater care and awareness.

CO₂: The Breath Hero Behind the Oxygen Myth in Yoga

Carbon dioxide is often misunderstood. We’ve been taught it’s a waste gas, something we need to exhale quickly or “get rid of.” But in reality, CO₂ plays a vital role in how we absorb oxygen, regulate our nervous system, and maintain calm.

How the Oxygen Myth in Yoga Affects Breathwork

Thanks to a process called the Bohr Effect, your red blood cells only release oxygen into your tissues if there’s enough carbon dioxide in the bloodstream.

So if we over-breathe or breathe too quickly, even with deep breaths, we may actually lose too much CO₂, making it harder for oxygen to reach the places it’s needed.

That’s the real issue behind the oxygen myth in yoga: it’s not just about breathing more, it’s about breathing better.

The Nervous System + The CO₂ Connection

Fast breathing or mouth breathing often leads to CO₂ depletion, which can cause anxiety, panic, dizziness, and disconnection.

When we slow our breathbreathe through the nose, or practice gentle breath holds, we retain more CO₂. This naturally supports the parasympathetic nervous system, bringing calm, safety, and regulation.

Breath Resilience: Moving Beyond the Myth

To move beyond the oxygen myth in yoga, we need to teach practices that:

  • Honour the role of CO₂
  • Support breath control and regulation
  • Help students build CO₂ tolerance gradually and safely
