Menopause isn’t just about physical changes, it’s an emotional journey, too. Learning emotional regulation in menopause gives you back the ability to pause, breathe, and choose how you respond.
Mood swings. Sudden tears. Irritability. Anxiety that comes out of nowhere.
Sound familiar?
These shifts can feel overwhelming, confusing, and even a little scary. But here’s the truth no one really tells you:
You’re not broken. You’re not losing it. You’re changing, and that’s sacred.
I want to share why emotional regulation is one of the most important (and empowering) tools you can cultivate in midlife, and how it can transform your menopause experience from something to survive… into something you can thrive through.
Hormones and Emotions: It’s Not Just in Your Head
During perimenopause and menopause, your oestrogen and progesterone levels naturally decline. These hormones don’t just influence your cycle, they also have a profound effect on neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, which support mood, motivation, calm, and emotional balance.
When these chemical messengers shift, it’s no wonder we feel:
- More reactive
- Less patient
- Prone to tearfulness or anxiety
- Emotionally fragile
This doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means your inner landscape is changing, and it’s time to respond with more compassion, not more pressure. When we practice emotional regulation in menopause, we soften the fight-or-flight reaction and create space to feel without being overwhelmed.
What Is Emotional Regulation?
Emotional regulation is the ability to:
- Pause and respond, rather than react
- Understand what you’re feeling and why
- Move through challenging emotions without being consumed by them
- Re-centre yourself with grounding practices
It’s not about being perfectly calm all the time (that’s unrealistic!), it’s about having tools to come back to balance when the waves hit.
Your Nervous System Is the Bridge
Think of your nervous system as the communication line between your body and brain. When it’s dysregulated, often due to stress, poor sleep, blood sugar imbalances, or unresolved emotions, your ability to manage feelings is naturally impacted.
This is why during menopause, so many women feel “on edge” or “not like themselves.”
Your window of tolerance gets narrower, and small things feel huge.
But here’s the good news: You can widen that window again.
Breath, Movement, Stillness: Your Emotional Support Toolkit
You don’t need to power through or pretend you’re fine.
Instead, you can nurture your nervous system with practices that truly support you:
✅ Breathwork — Techniques like full yogic breath, 4-7-8, or alternate nostril breathing help soothe the fight-or-flight response and activate calm.
✅ Gentle movement – Slow yoga, walking, or stretching to shift stuck energy.
✅ Stillness & self-inquiry – Journaling, meditation, or simply placing a hand on your heart and asking: “What do I need right now?”
These aren’t luxuries, they’re lifelines. Especially in menopause. There’s no shame in needing emotional regulation in menopause, it’s a powerful act of self-care.
